EXECUTIVE TEAM

PolyFuel has a team of employees which collectively has 145 years of fuel cell experience. The PolyFuel executive management team has 27 years of collective fuel cell experience in design, engineering, manufacturing and business development.

Jim Balcom – President and CEO

Jim Balcom joined PolyFuel in September 2002 from Chrysalix, the fuel cell venture capital firm, where he was Entrepreneur-in-Residence for approximately one year. Prior to Chrysalix, Jim spent four years with Sonigistix, a technology start-up in various VP positions developing and commercializing a flat panel speaker technology licensed from the University of British Columbia. Jim ultimately became President of the company and negotiated its sale to one of the audio industry’s larger players in 2001. Prior to Sonigistix, Jim spent four years with Ballard Power Systems in senior fuel cell development engineering and fuel cell manufacturing management positions. Previously, Jim spent several years in various operating and management positions with Ball Packaging and Stuart Plastics Recycling Ltd, as well as management consulting experience with Coopers and Lybrand and Touche Ross and Partners. Jim has a Systems Design Engineering Degree from the University of Waterloo in Canada, and an MBA from Harvard.

Thomas P. Caldwell – Interim Chief Financial Officer

Thomas P. Caldwell serves as Polyfuel’s Interim Chief Financial Officer and Secretary. Tom is the President of Marin Financial Consulting Group, Inc., a company he founded to provide interim CFO services to both public and private companies. Tom has over twenty-five years of business experience, has raised in excess of $650 Million in capital and has served as CFO for several technology companies. Experienced in all facets of financial leadership, he brings expertise in capital raising, business strategy, mergers & acquisitions and financial operations. His diverse experience includes companies in energy, technology manufacturing, software, internet, new media and financial services. He served as CFO for MyPoints.com, where he led its highly successful IPO and secondary offering, raising $250 million. Before that, he was CFO of Dynamics Circuits, Inc., a technology manufacturer and Bain Capital portfolio company, where he led the sale of the company for $265 million. Previous to that, he was a Director in the financial advisory services practice of PriceWaterhouseCoopers and a Vice President of the investment banking firm Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin. He started his career with Chevron on its national financial management development program. Tom holds a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Santa Clara University, an MBA from the University of Chicago and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Rick Cooper – Vice President Business Development

Rick Cooper joined PolyFuel in November 2002. He is responsible for sales, marketing and other external relationships for PolyFuel. Previously, Rick was chief executive officer of the U.S. division of Xcellsis, a joint venture between Ballard Power Systems, Daimler Chrysler and Ford Motor Company. Whilst Rick was at Xcellis, the U.S. operations of Ballard/Xcellsis from one to 150 employees over a period of six years and raised more than $80 million while building a leading fuel cell product development team and facilities. He was a member of the California Fuel Cell Partnership steering committee. In addition, he has product development experience in the test equipment industry and battery R&D experience with Ballard starting in the early 1980s. Rick is a registered Professional Engineer in California and earned honors degrees in chemistry and mechanical engineering from the British Columbia Institute of Technology and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Henry Voss – Vice President Engineering

Henry Voss joined PolyFuel in March 2003 and is responsible for the Company’s technology development at PolyFuel. Previously, Henry spent more than 12 years at Ballard Power Systems, most recently as Director, System Integration responsible for the next generation automotive fuel cell stack design. In his previous role as Director, Portable Power Products Henry initiated and led Ballard’s efforts developing portable fuel cell stacks and systems, culminating in the production release of the Nexa 1kW system, a hydrogen system for indoor applications. He holds over twenty U.S. patents in PEM fuel cell technology. Henry earned a masters degree in mechanical engineering, with a thesis in adaptive control systems, from the University of British Columbia.

Philip Cox PhD, MBA – Vice President of Product Development

Philip Cox received a PhD in Electrochemistry from Southampton University in England and an MBA from Santa Clara University. Dr. Cox has over 16 years experience in the management and development of electrochemical and materials technologies. He has been at PolyFuel for 6 years and held various positions. He has worked on systems development, MEA development as well as membrane development. He is currently vice president of product development with responsibility for membrane development. Prior to joining PolyFuel Dr. Cox was a program manager at SRI International where he had responsibility for various research and development programs focused on a wide range of electrochemical and materials technologies. These include the development of fuel cell membranes for hydrogen and DMFC applications, battery technologies including lithium ion and lithium polymer systems and ultracapacitors.
