Laptop fuel cell announced

How about a fuel cell to keep your laptop humming longer? PolyFuel of Mountain View today announced that it was releasing its new membrane for use in direct methanol fuel cells. The company says that the new technology will allow small fuel cells for use in portable computers, PDAs and cell phones to run longer and quieter.

"Limited battery runtimes today restrict the functionality that can be built into portable devices," says Jim Balcom, president and CEO of PolyFuel. "This problem will only get worse as wireless and other capabilities are added to these devices."

PolyFuel, which was spun off of SRI in 1999, is privately held and funded with venture capital from Mayfield, Ventures West, Technology Partners, Intel Capital and Chrysalix Energy.
